What is Health?

In 1948, in its constitution, the World Health Organization defined health as "a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity" [1]. The definition was updated in the 1986 "Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion" to say health is a "resource for everyday life, not the objective of living", and "health is a positive concept emphasizing social and personal resources, as well as physical capacities." [2]

What is Wellness?

Wellness can be defined as the pursuit of a healthy, balanced lifestyle. Wellness, as an alternative concept, is generally thought to mean more than the mere absence of disease; rather it is an optimal state of health. Wellness is pursued by people interested in recovering from ill health or specific health conditions or by those interested in optimizing their already good state of health.

One can take the concept of wellness even further - addressing the importance of relaxation and stress management.  Wellness to many is often incorporates a holistic approach to improving the overall, total being - body and mind.   Everything we do in our lifestyle contributes to a level of wellness - from programs that improve wellness by addressing a wide range of issues such as improved physical exercise, weight control, adopting healthier and to stress management.

Wellness programs can addressed the broad-spectrum as well as be very tailored to the individual.  The overall goal of any wellness program should be to encourage a lifestyle that is balanced.  And by adopting such behavior - whether intrinsic or learned, one can hope that many risk factors for disease are minimized.

1.  Corazón and the American Heart Association

Corazón has officially adopted the American Heart Association (AHA) as our company charity.  We share a common mission: making healthy lifestyle choices through fitness, healthy food and overall wellness.  While our relationship with AHA is just at the beginning with our official launch on National Go Red Day - February 1, 2008, we anticipate this to be a long-term commitment.

During the inaugural month of February 2008, Corazón will donate 10% of the proceeds from official Go Red events to the American Heart Association.  The culmination of the Go Red campaign is the Corazón Grand Opening on February 29, 2008 - serving as the wrap of the Go Red campaign.  However, it is just the beginning of our new focus on heart health and wellness initiatives

2.  Go Red for Women at Corazón

During February 2008, in observance of the AHA's Go Red for Women campaign, Corazón launches with an official Go Red for Women Luncheon featuring a heart-healthy lunch and educational program.  With introductions from the Vice President of the Central Ohio AHA Chapter, attendees heard a brief address and watched a short movie about how Go Red for Women is observed world-wide.

It is staggering to know that not only is cardiovascular disease the leading cause of death for women (surpassing Cancer), it is the leading cause of death in women over the age of 25.  This sobering statistic should make everyone pause to question why women so often overlook their own health needs, but are clearly invested in the dedicated healthcare needs of their spouses, companions, children, siblings and even parents or grandparents.  However, the very person those family members rely upon often neglects their own health until it is too late.

Go Red for Women was started by the American Heart Associate to call attention to the fact that most women know their dress size, but do not know their "numbers" - from blood pressure to cholesterol levels to include knowing and understanding their LDL and HDL levels.  In fact, the reason behind the  "Red Dress" icon and pin that adorns many collars and lapels, is to remind us everyone about the need to know one's numbers as well as that dress size.   The ultimate goal of Go Red for Women is nothing less than a 25% reduction in coronary heart disease and stroke risk by the year 2010.   Go Red for Women is an educational campaign to bring awareness that heart disease is not just for men.

How does Go Red for Women tie into wellness?  The good news is that in many cases heart disease is preventable.  Go Red for Women brings awareness to women and educates about simple things to minimize their risks, such as:

  • learning how to talk to their doctors
  • learn their numbers and what they really mean
  • learn intervention strategies to improve their numbers
  • schedule regular heart checks - just women usually do with their mammogram
  • if necessary, take medications to improve their cholesterol
  • live a healthier lifestyle by managing their weight, exercise, diet, stress and to stop smoking

In his luncheon presentation, Dr. Dennis A. Calnon, a renown Central Ohio cardiologist and Corazon member, discussed the details of how cardiovascular disease exists in women versus men:

Further, Dr. Calnon, who is head of Nuclear Cardiology at Riverside Methodist Hospital, offered all Go Red Luncheon attendees, their immediate family members, and all Corazon members the opportunity to obtain a Cardiac CT Scan through his facility at generous savings, but only if scheduled by the end of February 2008.  Download the flyer [pdf].

  • Background - Fitness Challenge

The final results from “The beat goes on” are in. We again had some very impressive results turned in, particularly among the women’s’ strength contestants. Here is the breakdown of the individual and team winner:

Team weight loss- –“The wine’rs”, team of Jen Babner, Diana Nicely, and Lisa McMullen, trained by Mack Lemmon.

Team strength –team of Donna Hunt, Stephanie Schoener, Dillar Nelson, and Julia Casey, trained By Cassie Whittington.

Individual weight loss (women’s) – Shelly Graham, trained by Bryan O’Donnell.

Individual weight loss (men’s) – Garrie Haas, trained by Jose Perez.

Individual strength – Cindy Probst, trained by Mack Lemmon.

A great job by all of the above participants. Hate to say it but the gals smoked the guys! The winning teams will have a private dinner in the Vino Sotano prepared by our chef. Both individual winners will receive a full ladies’ spa makeover package valued at $200.00. A very special mention must be made to two weight loss participants who competed in both challenges to date, Diana Nicely and Beth Fligner. They were in the running for the individual weight loss title in both challenges and each of them lost a significant amount of weight and inches. Diana and Beth were both remarkably consistent with their training and efforts. As a result, each will receive a $100.00 spa gift card. The fitness staff wants to thank all of you for the hard work and good times.

  • Length - 8weeks.
